These regulations came into force on 1 April 1996. The regulations require employers to use a safety
sign where there is a significant risk to health and safety that has not been avoided or controlled by methods
under other relevant law, provided that use of a sign can help reduce risk.
The regulations apply to all workplaces and to all activities where people are employed, but exclude signs
used in connection with transport or the supply and marketing of dangerous materials, products and equipment.
These are covered under separ4te legislation e.g. Chemicals (Hazard Information and Packaging for supply)
Regulations (CHIP)
In addition the regulations require, where necessary the use of road traffic signs in workplaces to
regulate road traffic but are not intended for use in directing traffic on public roads, waterways etc.
